Microsoft has developed a mobile operating system for smartphones and other mobile devices. This platform for mobile devices is called as the Windows Mobile operating system. Windows Mobile is programmed in the C++ programming language and the kernel used is the Windows CE 5.2. The Windows Mobile platform belongs to the Windows CE family of operating systems.
Windows Mobile has many features that are similar to the Windows operating systems we use on the computer. The home screen of the OS displays the owner information, e-mails, upcoming appointments, scheduled tasks to be performed and the current date. The current time and volume information is showed in the taskbar which is situated at the top of the screen. Just like the Microsoft Office that we use on our computers, there is a feature called as Office Mobile for the mobile phones which contains the applications like Word mobile, OneNote mobile, PowerPoint mobile and Excel mobile. Another application included in the Windows Mobile OS is the outlook mobile which is used for sending e-mail messages.
To browse the internet from your mobile, Microsoft has programmed Internet Explorer Mobile which is a mobile version of the internet explorer that we use on our PC. For the purpose of playing audio and video files, there is a Windows Media Player for mobile phones that is in built in the OS. To share internet connection between your Windows Mobile phone and an attached computer, there is a facility provided which is termed as Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). This connection can be established via a bluetooth or an USB port. The Windows Mobile OS has a multi-tasking ability which means that it can perform various tasks at one time. The file system of the Windows Mobile platform is similar to any other Windows OS for computer. The files system supports many extensions or file formats. The operating system uses a graphical user interface (GUI) as the default user interface to interact with the user.
The Windows Mobile platform is very user friendly just like the Windows OS for our computers. This common feeling that the user gets when operating a Windows Mobile powered smartphone is one of the reasons behind its success.
