The Palm operating system is well known for the good quality of multimedia and graphic services included in it. The structure of the multimedia features of the Palm OS is quite simple but is indeed very effective.
The sound is one multimedia service that is very efficiently organized in the Palm OS. There are some sample sound application programming interfaces (API) in the Palm OS that are responsible for the audio services. But these APIs do not include generation, GUI and data processing. There are APIs for controlling audio streams. At one time, 15 audio streams for playback are supported by the sound APIs. The sound service in Palm OS supports many different formats of audio files. Music files in the formats like MP3, WAVE etc. can be played using the media player because of the sound service. The streams for which playback is enabled are mono, stereo, 8- bit and 16-bit bit audio streams. Also, the user is enabled to mix sounds and also record sounds if the mobile device has a recording system available.
Other multimedia services in the Palm operating system include the video and photography services. There are APIs present in the Palm OS to support videos and pictures. The Palm OS supports files with video formats like MPEG-4, 3gp and many more. It also enables full-screen playback of videos along with the recording feature. The graphic quality for the videos as well as the pictures is very good and clear. The Palm platform supports the capturing of photos if there is a camera available on the Palm OS phone. You can view the photos on your screen and also zoom for a close view. The multimedia services including sound, video and photography can be used by third-party developers to write application programs for the Palm OS.
All these multimedia services of the Palm operating system make it a diverse mobile platform as compared to other mobile operating system.
